What Should Your Ebook Be About?

What Should Your Ebook Be About?

You may already have corporate blogging or content marketing as part of your marketing business goals, and in that case, you’re ahead of the ebook creation game. You have content, you just need to stitch it together and get the word out there.

But what if you’re just now thinking about how an ebook could build your business, and you don’t already have content being created that could eventually become your book? Here’s a quick and easy way to get started figuring out exactly what your new ebook should be about.

1. Write about your area of expertise.

If you are a business owner, you probably know quite a bit about how your product or service solves a particular problem. In other words, you’re an expert! Now is your chance to showcase that expertise with a solid ebook filled with valuable information that your target market can really use.

If you’re thinking, “Well, I’m not exactly an expert in such-and-such yet,” you can still write an ebook. Maybe it will be about the process of becoming an expert! Something like “Learning Spanish, Starting from Nada,” for example.

2. Address an urgent need.

Your business may already do this, and you may already understand exactly how it works. But, if you’ve simply been thinking that what you do is “provide concierge services” you should sit down and consider carefully why anyone would feel an urgent need for your work. Because if you are non-committal or vague, you are unlikely to draw attention. Think about the business traveler who desperately needs someone to find a gift for his five-year-old daughter, whose birthday he’s missing because of this business trip? Figure out why it’s terribly important that people need your services, and you will begin to see what your ebook content can be about.

This same principle works if you think of it as addressing a fear (“Never worry again about termites destroying your home”) or satisfying a curiosity (“Ever wonder how they make Peeps?”). In fact, if your ebook can capitalize on several of these factors as they relate to your business, you’ll be well on your way. No matter what, your subject matter should draw the attention of your target audience!

3. Make sure your content isn’t easily available everywhere else.

There may be a zillion and one ebooks (free and otherwise) already out there to help you learn how to manage your time, so if you are going to compete in that market, you’ll have to come up with a unique angle.

You should be doing this anyway in your business; after all, there are plenty of companies competing for the same audience in just about every field. What makes you and your company unique? What sets you apart from the competition?

One way to get at this is to take a look at some ebooks put out by your competitors. Get your hands on a copy of each one, and as you read, take note of the times when you think, “Oh, we do it better than that! We offer…” Those are the things that set you apart!
