More Effective Tweeting, Email and Blogging: Tips from an Expert
When is the best time for tweeting? On what day of the week is your email most likely to be opened? How often should you blog to get the most links and comments?
Dan Zarella is a social media scientist at HubSpot who uncovers the answers to questions just like these. He recently hosted a seminar called “The Science of Timing” that offered some powerful takeaways for business people who use Twitter, Facebook, email and blogging to promote their products and services.

1. TWITTER
- The time during which your tweet is most likely to be retweeted is 2PM – 5PM.
- Those with the most followers tweet about 22 times per day.
- The best time to tweet links is on the weekends.
- More frequent tweeting leads to more Twitter followers. However, if you are tweeting links to your own site, don’t crowd the stream; spacing out your posts there is better.
2. FACEBOOK
- Pages that post every other day tend to have the most Likes.
- Weekends are best for Facebook sharing.Articles posted really early in the morning (1AM-3AM) perform best.
3. EMAIL
- People read email mostly in the morning.
- Open rates are highest on Saturday and Sunday.
- Click-through rates are also highest on the weekends.
- Unsubscribes are higher if you only send once or twice a month.
4. BLOGGING
- People read blogs mostly in the morning, but percentages are still high throughout the day.
- Men report reading blogs at night than women do. Women read more in the morning. So, know your audience.
- Page views take a dip on the weekends.
- Articles posted at 10AM to 11AM get the most views. 11PM is another good time.
- Try posting at midnight. Comments occur more on Saturday and Sunday.
- If you’re after comments then blog on weekends—and post early.
- If you’re blogging for links then post on Monday through Thursday—and post early.
- The more frequently you publish the better. Don’t be afraid to publish more than once a day.

Thanks for sharing this. It’s a great summary and much of it surprised me.
Thanks for reading and commenting, Erin. There are some surprising things in here, but I think the final word on pretty much all tweeting, blogging, and posting is test, test, test. Everyone’s audience will differ and it’s good to know exactly what kind of habits your particular readers have.
